“Enrico Toti” statue

In the center of Cassino, there is a statue dedicated to Enrico Toti. It is an homage to the memory of the WWI Italian hero. The bronze monument is located in the square named after him. The realization of the work is particularly interesting because the sculptor, Egidio Ambrosetti from Anagni, represented the hero in his last moments of life. We can see the Italian soldier already wounded, while trying to throw his crutch at the enemy, a moment before being shot to death.

Armando Diaz square

Along the central street “Corso della Repubblica”, there is Piazza Diaz. The pleasant gardens have well-kept flower beds and benches, for anyone who desires to stop for a bit while visiting Cassino.

In the middle of the gardens, there is a statue of the Virgin Mary, known as the “Madonnina”, put there as a symbol of devotion by the citizens. Here we can find the remains of the ancient Church of Carmine too, almost razed to the ground after the bombardments of WWII.

General Anders’ bust

General Anders rests in the Polish War Cemetery on Montecassino with his soldiers, dead for our country’s freedom. In his honor, his bronze bust is placed in front of the Historiale Museum.

“Bear Wojtek” statue

In “XV Febbraio” Square a statue in memory of the Bear Wojtek has been inaugurated; a Syrian brown bear that faithfully served the Polish II Corps of General Wladyslaw Anders, from 1942 to 1947. The bear was the mascot of the Anders’ Corps and its name is the diminutive of “Wojciech”, an old Slavic name still used in Poland, that means “smiling warrior”.
