The urban walls and the acropolis

The Roman city was protected by massive polygonal walls that were 4.5 km long and surrounded a wider surface than the one effectively inhabited. The Casinum city’s urban walls suffered much damage during WWII; indeed, some sections were restored during the Middle Ages or involved in new construction buildings, as well.

The walls also included two doors, Porta Romana on the South-Western side, and Porta Campana on the South-Eastern side, both crossed by Via Latina Nova, which constituted the “decumanus maximus”, that is the principal road of the city. On the Acropolis, a strategic and sacred point of the Roman city, a temple dedicated to Jupiter and a forest dedicated to Apollo rose at the highest point. The arx was provided with a massive pedestal made of polygonal masonry and was protected by city walls connected to the much wider perimeter of urban walls. A monumental door, called “the door of the Acropolis”, used to stand on the western side of the Acropolis; it was demolished during the eighteen century.

The defense system of the city has been proven to date back to the 5th and 4th centuries BC.
