The War Memorial Cemeteries

Most of the victims of the four long battles of Cassino rest in the military cemeteries in and around the city. Every year, they host touching commemorative ceremonies and are the destination of pilgrimages from all over the world.

Polish War cemetery

It is located near Montecassino’s Abbey, where 1,052 bodies of the Polish II Corps have been buried, including the mortal remains of General Anders, who died in exile in 1970 and was moved there as his expressed desire.

In the locality of Colle Marino, near Caira, 20,035 corpses of German fighters, fallen in southern Italy (excluding Sicily) are buried.

Commonwealth War cemetery

This cemetery is located on the road to Sant’Angelo in Theodice, a town near Cassino. It hosts 4,265 bodies and was inaugurated on the 31st of August 1956 with the intervention of General Alexander and all the Commonwealth’s Ambassadors.

Italian war cemetery

It is situated on the Via Casilina, 2 km from the town of Mignano, on the slopes of Mount Lungo. It was the place of the first fighting of the Italian regular departments. Here 974 victims of the liberation war of the years 1943-45 are buried, coming from other war cemeteries of all of Italy. In front of the Cemetery, on the opposite side of the street, there is a little museum.
