The public park and the urban park of the Gari river

The peculiar hydrogeological conditions make the city of Cassino’s urban center one of Europe’s richest hydric basins.
The value of this resource is especially made by the refined physical-chemical characteristics that make the waters of the river Gari particularly indicated for human consumption, beyond its available capacity (about 20 m3/s), and stable supply distribution.
Its springs are located at the feet of Montecassino and Rocca Janula, in Piazza Croce, behind the cathedral. After a short underground path, the river Gari comes to the surface again into the Public Park (AKA Parco XV Marzo 1944), where it splits into two canals that, once joined up again, create a peculiar small lake. Starting from the gardens up to the Varronian Baths, a suggestive naturalistic walking and cycling path flanking the river has been realized. Besides that, the river is also accessible for canoeing, boating, and rafting.
