The Roman Theater

Located in the central part of the Roman town, the theater was built during the Augustan Era following the natural slopes of the hill, using the “bichrome opus reticulatum”. The building was brought to light in 1936 by the archaeologist Gianfilippo Carettoni and restored between 1959 and 1962. The cavea used by the audience, whose semicircular rows of seats were crossed vertically by five staircases, was divided into two areas: the lower area (ima cavea) and the upper area (summa cavea).
On top, there are traces of an arched tunnel (crypta). Two corridors (parodoi) allowed direct access from the outside to the orchestra. In the scaenae frons, there were three doors; the central and largest one (porta regia), and two smaller ones at the sides (portae hospitales). The area of the post scaenam, made up of a quadriporticus with a garden, went under excavation and restoration work in 2000. The monument can accommodate about 2000 people and still has its function; every year, especially in summer, it hosts important cultural and theatrical events.
